Thabani finishes 7th in Township 21km

A helpers run will take place on 8 October starting at the club at 4.30am.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club members supported the Township to Township marathon on Sunday with some good results.

Stoki Dlamini recorded a good time of 3.00 followed by S Mtungwa 3.27, M Mpungose 3.33, A Mnguni 3.37, R Gcaba 3.45, B Mlanduli 3.45, J Shishani 3.49, T Mntungwa 3.57, T Mdanda 4.19, C Khowa 4.25, W Mtungwa 4.39, T Mayvis 4.49.

In the 21km event, Thabani Ngcobo posted an excellent 1:16 and finished seventh overall among a total field of 801. Other 21km results: S Msomi 1.49, M Mzimela 2.13, N Mbhele 2.22. Well done to them all for keeping the Toti AC flag flying high.

The club appeals for volunteers to assist with marshaling to contact Martyn Clarke on 082-8763751 for the club’s marathon on 16 October.

The club’s 40th year celebrations take place on 8 October at the clubhouse starting at 2pm. Members pay R30 which includes meat and salads, while visitors pay R15, which includes salads and take their own meat. RSVP to Belinda by 3 October for catering purposes on 083-408-0639. A cash bar will be available.

Upcoming races: 2 October – Duke of York 16km run/walk and a 5km run/walk hosted by Collegians Harriers in Pietermaritzburg at the Bishopstowe Hall starts at 6.30am. The 16km is a pre-entry event, with a closing date two weeks before.

2 October – Cooee Challenge 42.2/21.1km run and 10km run/walk at Newlands Athletic Club starts at 5am. Pre-entry and late entries accepted.

9 October – Swift Challenge at the Hulamin ground in Campsdrift, Pietermaritzburg. The 42.2km run, 21.1km run and 10km run/walk start at 6am.

9 October – Rural Chapter 10km run starts at Mgezeni Athletic Club at 7am.

The club walker’s championship will take place at the following races: 10km: 30 October – KZN Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium starting at 7am; 21km: 6 November – Checkout Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium starting at 6.30am.

Entries for the Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon on 16 October are open. This race will run/walk from Hutchison Park and back, due to the Metro Rail railway line damage. Club members cannot take part in the race. A helpers run will take place on 8 October starting at the club at 4.30am. Club vests must be worn and Coke and water will be supplied. This is for members only. Members can use their times as a Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier.

Should you not be able to do your time trial duties as per the list, make arrangements for someone to stand in for you. Time trial duties: 28 September Des van der Merwe and Marco Coetsee.

The club AGM will take place on 26 October at Lords and Legends. Nomination forms are available at the clubhouse or can be emailed on request.

Athletes are reminded that reflective belts are mandatory for time trials.

Weekly time trials are on Wednesdays for both walkers (starting at 5.30pm) and and runners who start at 6pm, both over 4km and 8km. Visitors are welcome to join and should meet at the clubhouse at Hutchison Park. On Saturdays there is an 11km run and walk from the clubhouse at 5.30am for walkers and 6am for runners. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served afterwards.
