One of the dead men was a police official stationed at Durban Flying Squad.

A police official was among men shot and killed while two others were wounded during a shootout with police after they kidnapped a guard and dropped him in Isipingo after a robbery on Friday morning, 24 September.

Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane of the SAPS KZN media centre said it is alleged that at about 1.30am, suspects broke into a supermarket in the Durban CBD and took an undisclosed amount of cash after cutting open the safe.

They kidnapped one of the guards on duty at the supermarket.

“Police received information and spotted a suspicious-looking white Toyota Etios in the vicinity after they dropped off the guard,” said Lt Col Zwane.

“The suspects allegedly fired shots towards the members who retaliated.

The suspects lost control of their vehicle and it overturned. Two were found dead inside the vehicle and the other two were wounded and taken to hospital for treatment.”

One of the dead men was a police official stationed at Durban Flying Squad.

Two unlicensed firearms and electrical detonators were recovered.

“While the police were busy at the scene, they noticed another suspicious-looking black VW Polo, driving slowly passed the scene.”

The vehicle was stopped and searched and an unlicensed firearm, airtime vouchers and money suspected to have been taken during the robbery was also recovered.

Two more men aged between 30 and 35 were arrested.
