Bank wash-away: Water flow stabilised

Motorists have been wading through swathes of sand

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge confirmed that water flow has for the moment been stabilised at Mayville Terrace on Friday morning, 2 September.

The embankment supporting the road was washed away during July’s heavy rainfall when water flow built up due to a block stormwater drain.

Motorists have been wading through swathes of sand that are swept down by the water flow, which at times makes passing quite difficult. On Tuesday, 30 August, traffic on Kingsway was reduced to one lane as a motorist became stuck in the mudslide on the road.

Three major projects within the area have been assessed together to obtain a quantum of additional expenditure of R8-million to R12-million. These are the washaway at the southern end of Mayville Terrace (ward 97), a private residence on the first dune along Kingsway towards Athlone Park (ward 93) and Tiger Rocks Road in Isipingo (ward 90).

“The roads department is on site after being requested to remove washed down sand from the Kingsway road surface to allow better traffic flow,” said Cllr Beetge.

At present there is no indication when the project will be completed.
