Watersports open day open to all keen paddlers

All equipment will be provided and there will be food and refreshments on sale.

Calling all watersports enthusiasts and any youngsters keen to learn about paddling – Toti Watersports Club hosts an open day from 1pm to 4pm at Toti Lagoon on Saturday, 3 September.

Following on the hugely successful inaugural open day the club hosted earlier in the year, any age group from six-years and older is invited to check out the fascinating world of kayaking and surfski.

“All equipment will be provided and there will be food and refreshments on sale,” said coach Mark Barber. “We are hosting the open day as it is the start of summer.

Children who have joined the programme have excelled in competitions. We have two girls in first and second positions in the U16 surfski series, and four occupy the top four places in the boys U16 series. In the girls U18 doubles, we have a graduate in second position.

We have produced an Olympian in Tiffany Kruger, Michelle Burne is a current champion and Jenna Ward is a renowned paddler with plenty of titles to her name.

Brent Chiazzari, one of our coaches, Brett Hadiaris and Gene Prato are all top paddlers who regularly return top Dusi Marathon times.

We have seen good results from our programme.”

The programe is split into three rings. “We take in paddlers and develop them. That’s the first ring,” said Mark. “We steer them to join lifesaving clubs, as they need strong paddlers. That’s the second ring. Thirdly, we invite them to join swimming clubs.

We deal with skill development, discipline, fitness, technique and ultimately job creation, as our charges can get summer jobs as lifeguards on Toti beaches.

Training is done four times a week. We deal with a different network of areas, while having fun at the same time.”
