Newbie angler hooks her first catch

Corrie's one wish was to catch a fish for the first time.

TOTI beach manager, Jayce Govender helped make a Toti resident’s wish come true when he took her fishing and helped her catch her first fish.

Corrie Cross (68) of Pretoria married Toti’s Frank Diamond (63) in May, nine months after the pair met on social media.

In an article published in the Sun on 21 July, she said she loved living in Toti, but her one wish was to catch a fish for the first time, especially now that she lived on the coast.

Adaptive Unlimited’s Wesley Smith noted her request when he read the article and asked the Sun for Corrie’s contact details to pass on to the beach manager to take her fishing, as both are involved in helping disabled and visually impaired people participate in watersports.

Jayce and the chairman of Reunion Angling Club, Krish Naidoo took Corrie and Frank to Toti main beach for her to try her luck to land the ‘big one’ on Saturday, 13 August.

Jayce, who is a member of the Reunion Angling Club, has seven caps for representing the KZN team and was awarded presidential colours twice. He captained a six-man team that won gold at the Struisbaai Nationals Angling competition in Cape Town in 2012 and in March, he won an inter-provincial fishing competition at Mtunzini.“Being a keen angler for many years and helping disabled people on the beach, I wanted to help Corrie get her wish,” said Jayce.

“I hoped we could help her catch a small fish of 1kg or 2kg. I never thought she would catch a big one, but I guess it was a case of first time lucky as she landed the big one.”Corrie surprised them all when she hauled in a 5.5kg garrick, using live bait. “Jayce cast the line, but once the fish was on the hook, I took the rod and he and Krish just advised me.

We caught it on the beach with a tiny fish on the hook. They reckoned it weighed just over 5kg.”

There was no tag and release on Corrie’s mind when she landed her first fish and it soon made its way into her frying pan.

“We had a lovely supper on Sunday night, thanks to Jayce,” said a grateful Corrie.
