Lagoon cleared of post-storm litter

Other goals such as stopping illegal netting and the opening of the river mouth will also be their main focus.

MOUNDS of refuse and litter left on the banks of the lagoon in Amanzimtoti was tackled by a group of volunteers on Sunday, 7 August.

Headed by Sea Shepherd and Army Saints volunteer, Willie Burger, the group gathered outside  Ollie’s Pub and Grill where they armed themselves with gumboots and bin bags.
The lagoon which is popular for its abundance of bird life was marred by tons of litter which washed up after the storms a few weeks ago. “I’m passionate about nature and the birdlife in this place so it broke my heart to it being left in such a filthy state. I’m doing this for the birds because this is their home and it’s up to us keep it clean and safe for the animals,” said Willie.

Another nature lover who joined in the clean-up was the manager of the pub and grill, Kim Naude. She boasts of the lagoons beauty and urges the Toti community to take pride in preserving it. “We have to appreciate nature before it is gone forever. I’m with the Scouts and I always encourage the youngsters to take care of and responsibility of their natural surroundings. With this clean-up, we are setting an example for the generation today and future generations to learn about preservation and the importance of nature,”she added.
The clean-up will be an ongoing campaign which the group will be fully committed and supportive of. Other goals such as stopping illegal netting and the opening of the river mouth will also be their main focus.
Those who came out to take part in the clean-up were thanked by Burger. Support from Army Saints; Shaun and Chanel Callaghan was appreciated and they were thanked for helping with the project.
