Missing stormwater cover raises concern

Report stormwater matters to the 24-hour toll-free line on 080-131-3013

AN Amanzimtoti caretaker is concerned about the danger posed by a broken stormwater drain cover to passing pedestrians along Kingsway.

Tommy Liebenberg said he has reported the matter to council on numerous occasions in the last two months, to no avail.

“I received a reference number, but although I’ve tried to follow it up, nothing is being done about it,” he said. “There was a cover, but vehicles use our driveway to make a U-turn and the cover was broken. I’ve put blocks and roof tiles over the hole, but the vehicles keep driving over and breaking them.”

In desperation, Tommy has planted a small tree in the metre deep hole in the hope it will warn vehicles and pedestrians of the danger.

“Three weeks ago an inspector came to assess the damage, but he never returned. Last week I called council again, but they still haven’t responded. I even offered to pay for a new cover.

A pedestrian can fall in and seriously hurt themselves if they don’t see the hole. At night it is very dark in front of our complex. I’m scared someone gets hurt.”

In response to the Sun’s query, eThekwini head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa said council was not aware of the matter. “The relevant unit has been tasked to urgently attend to the matter.

The city encourages residents to continue reporting stormwater matters to the 24-hour toll-free line on 080-131-3013.”
