Alert issued as business burglaries spike

The burglars mainly go for computers and large screen TVs

COMMUNITY Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) warns business owners that burglars are targeting their establishments.

CCPO committee member, George Snodey estimates that between 15 and 20 businesses have been burgled in the Toti area from Athlone Park to Winklespruit in the last two months, including five in a local business park.

“The burglars mainly go for computers and large screen TVs,” he said. “They strike after hours and on weekends, mainly the pre-dawn hours between between 4am and 5.30am. They override the alarm and break down doors to gain entry. They are in and out within minutes, so the use of security beams is advised as it may give security companies extra time to respond.”

A vigilant Snodey, with assistance from Metro Police, apprehended fraudsters on Tuesday morning, 11 July.

Snodey was in the Arbour Crossing car park when he noticed a silver VW Polo drive in with three occupants.

His suspicions were aroused when he observed their body language. He followed them when they drove out for about 45 minutes, until they left the area and headed south on the N2.

“I notified Metro Police’s Shawn Jooste and he and his crewman pulled them over in Umgababa to question them,” said Snodey.

After a thorough search of their vehicle, some bank cards were found in their possession which didn’t correspond with their ID documents and driver’s licenses. It was found the one card was stolen that morning in the Woodhouse garage area near Storage City. Another card had been stolen from someone in Umbumbulu and had already been cancelled.

The men were arrested and detained.
