Resident’s quick response helps nets burglar

The CCPO responded to the call-out even though the victims were not members

QUICK response from a resident who spotted a house burglar breaking into a complex led to the criminal’s arrest on the property on Monday afternoon, 4 July.

Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) committee member, George Snodey said the Elgro resident spotted the burglar gaining entry through the roof of a Poplar Road property and quickly called the CCPO.

“The CCPO, Blue Security, Chubb Security and Toti SAPS members responded quickly. A laptop was already outside the premises,” said Snodey.

Suspecting the burglar was still inside the premises, they cordoned off the area.

When Metro Police dog unit arrived, Shawn Jooste and his K9 partner went into the premises and arrested the burglar.

“The benefit of the resident phoning quickly meant we could respond timeously and catch the burglar on the premises. People mustn’t hesitate to call us if they see something suspicious.”

The CCPO responded to the call-out even though the victims were not members. “Once again we came to the rescue of someone who was a non-member at the expense of paying members,” said Snodey. “This happens on a weekly basis. We respond hoping the victim is a member, but we don’t have time to find out if we hope to catch the perpetrator. It’s unfair that the few people who are paying the CCPO sponsor the majority who are not. We urge people to come on board and make a difference.”
