Intelligence received leads Umlazi K9 unit to Toti service station ATM

A STING operation carried out at a service station in Amanzimtoti led police to uncover a 25-year-old man who had 36 SASSA cards in his possession, after withdrawing cash from an ATM.

After receiving intelligence about fraud in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 June, police from the Umlazi K9 unit proceeded to the area and held observation.

The man was searched and found with 36 social welfare bank cards in his possession, with the PIN codes written on them. He was arrested and jailed at Amanzimtoti police station. He will be charged for fraud and contravening the Electronic Communication and Transaction Act and is due to appear in court soon.

Acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended the members and their canines on the arrest. “SASSA cards and an undisclosed amount of cash were seized from the suspect. The investigation will continue to establish if he is not linked to other crimes where SASSA cards were used. The police will also establish where and how the man got the SASSA cards,” he said.
