Car plant’s R6-bn investment a boon for local economy

There will be a direct impact on our local economy through the preferential procurement opportunities, job opportunities and skills development opportunities.

The opening of Toyota SA’s (TSA) new R6.1-billion manufacturing plant last week will have a direct impact on the local economy.

The Prospecton Business Forum (PBF) believes the confidence TSA has shown in the country’s economy, the province and South Durban will serve as a catalyst as well as an indicator to other large businesses and business in general that it is a great time to invest and expand operations in the region.

“There will be a direct impact on our local economy through the preferential procurement opportunities, job opportunities and skills development opportunities related to this investment,” said PBF chairman, Mark van Wyk.

“This investment will boost local business owners’ confidence in the region. This is a sizable investment and indicates the confidence that Toyota has in the region. This investment would not have been made had TSA had any concerns.

Local business in the automotive value chain and related industries, as well as surrounding communities can now have access to downstream enterprise and supplier development, preferential procurement and skills development and job creation opportunities by TSA and its supplier value chain. This can provide TSA suppliers the opportunity to create jobs as well.”

Van Wyk said plans for the dig-out port have been put on hold for the moment. The forum will hold an update on the proposed port and SIP2 for all businesses based in South Durban on Thursday, 23 June. The Provincial Planning Commission, KZN Transport and Transnet will participate.

Members of the forum have first preference, but non–member companies are also welcome to attend. RSVP via email to chair@prospectonbusinessforum.com.

“At present, it is business as usual for the Prospecton business owners who are scheduled to relocate their business due to the construction of the dig out port. We will engage Transnet about firm dates as these become available.

It is important that all companies directly or indirectly affected not make any rash decisions. The forum will represent all member company concerns to Transnet, provincial and national government so as to minimise the impacts of this initiative. Attendance at our SIP2 event will ensure the latest information-sharing opportunity.”
