Beware dog predators from above

She had a lucky escape as my dad scared him off.

EDITOR – We all know the adage that ‘anything can happen’, and the cliché of ‘it won’t happen to me’.

At sometime in our lives we hear stories about nature and the cycle of life.

We accept it when a lion attacks a buck or zebra or if a falcon catches a rabbit. Well, ‘it won’t happen to me’ happened and I’d just like to warn all the animal lovers in and around Amanzimtoti.

On the weekend of 22 April, we spotted an eagle – a huge one – floating above our area where we stay. Of course there was the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ and amazement at how carefree it seemed to float in the sky. On 28 April, all that amazement turned to anger. The eagle returned that same morning around 8am and caught my three-month-old chihuahua. That is no laughing matter.

It was one of the most heartbreaking experiences I ever had. As if that is not enough, the eagle returned on 10 May, again at around 8am. This time it had its eye on my one-year-old chihuahua. She had a lucky escape as my dad scared him off.

From now on, I keep my ‘girl’ in the house during the day and let her out only when I am around. Just a warning to the people that have a small dog, rather be safe than sorry. Only time will tell whether yours could be next.
