Pet owner livid after cat shot with pellet gun

In this neighbourhood lives an evil, callous coward who goes around shooting other people's pets.

A Whitfield Park animal lover is furious after her cat was shot with a pellet gun.

“I ask all Whitfield Park residents to be on the lookout for this person going around shooting with a pellet gun, be it an adult or a child,” said the resident, who did wish to be named.

“It could be in Snaefell Road or Arnold Hunt Road, but in this neighbourhood lives an evil, callous coward who goes around shooting other people’s pets.”

Three weeks ago, on Sunday afternoon, 17 April her cat was shot in the leg. “She came in the afternoon limping but I didn’t know she’d been shot, otherwise I would’ve kept her indoors.”

Because of her leg being injured by the bullet, her cat went out later that night and broke it. “I have no idea how the leg got broken but she must’ve jumped down somewhere and because of the injury, landed awkwardly.

I’ve had to pay thousands of rands to have her leg treated and she is only halfway into her recovery and there are complications,” she said.

“The vet mentioned nerve damage and is doing X-rays again and a battery of tests to establish the extent of the damage. I strongly oppose anybody who would do my cats harm and I now have expenses because someone shot my cat. Is this the coward’s Sunday afternoon pastime – looking for innocent defenceless animals to shoot at? Before doing so again, why don’t you shoot yourself in the leg to feel what it feels like, because you may be too ignorant to realise this but animals feel pain too.

Besides the absolute depravity of feeling the need to shoot at defenceless animals and for which you should seek help, this is illegal and you will be prosecuted at some stage in your miserable existence. What goes around, unfortunately always comes around too.

Cats are animals who are curious by nature and they visit other gardens in all innocence, not knowing that the owner of that garden may not want them there. That cat will surely not cause any harm to yourself or your property, so if you see a strange cat in your garden a squirt of water will send them away. There is no need to cause them harm.”

Toti SPCA said shooting an animal with a pellet gun is a criminal offense and the person responsible will be prosecuted for animal cruelty. If found guilty, they could face a fine of between R10,000 and R15,000. If you see someone shooting with a pellet gun in the St Winifreds area, call Toti SPCA on 031-904-2424.
