Opportunities abound

If you want to employ someone, even for a day, come to the container at AMCUP.

The Durban South Opportunity Centre opened its doors to unemployed job seekers on Monday, 8 February.

Through this project, a joint initiative between Durban South Business Forum (DSBF), Amanzimtoti Community Upliftment Project (AMCUP) and Vincit Omnia Veritas Trust, many of the job seekers standing on Kingsway in Warner Beach will be relocated to a shipping container prepared for this purpose at the entrance to AMCUP.

“This project is done with the full support of local government, SAPS and various other parties,” said project manager and director of AMCUP, Jaco Wijnmaalen.

All legal job seekers will be profiled and categorised in terms of skill and passed training, and experience. “In that way they will have the best chance of finding a job to best suit their specific aptitude and/or interest.”

Many of the job seekers were eager to input their details, with an influx already using the facility on opening day.

Anybody wishing to employ someone, be it only for the day, on a short-term contract or for possibly permanent employment is encouraged to use this channel rather than randomly picking someone from the street.

“In this way the best interest of legal job seekers, as well as possible employers are best served,” said Jaco. “If you want to employ someone, even for a day, come to the container at AMCUP where they have been screened and registered, rather than pick them up from the street.

These job seekers will also, as far as possible, be utilised in any community projects that come up. “In addition, those who did not find a job for the day will be given a plate of food, so they will at least not have to go home hungry and be forced to less desirable methods to find something to eat.”

The public is strongly encouraged to not give money to vagrants begging on street corners, but rather channel their good intentions to really help in upliftment through this project. Anybody wishing to make a financial or other contribution can contact Lee Lewis on 082-890-4982.

“We thank the many individual members of our community and local businesses who have already financially contributed to the cost of making this possible.
It will make a significant impact in uplifting our business and social community as well as the environment in particular,” said Jaco.
