Toti couple tap into water collection drive
Most people in KZN are not aware of what is going on.
A Toti couple has taken up a drive to collect water for drought-stricken regions in South Africa.
Last week Eben and Nicolene du Toit were badly affected by the disturbing images they saw on the Water Shortage South Africa Facebook page and read about SA’s farmers who are in desperate need of feed and water for their animals.
“We even read about a farmer who comitted suicide because he couldn’t to carry on,” said Nicolene. “It is terrible.”
The couple first decided to help with donations of feed for the animals, but then decided to focus on water. “We are sending water to points designted by Water Shortage South Africa,” said Eben. “This water will then be distributed to towns, animals and farms. We want to get water into towns that desperately need it.”

Nicolene’s aunt lives on a farm in the Free State, an area that has been badly hit by drought. “They live about 120km from Bloemfontein and they are struggling with no water.

Three points have been made available to drop off donations in Toti – Salajees Hardware in Commercial Road in the Toti CBD, Amanzimtoti Cares in Kingsway, Warner Beach, close to Victory KwikSpar, DTS Security at 85 Kingsway in Warner Beach, Wakefields at 392 Kingsway, Amanzimtoti or the councillor’s chambers at 423 Kingsway, Amanzimtoti. Alternative arrangements can also be made with Nicolene on 084-638-1604.
Water Shortage South Africa has suggested you use five or two litre bottles and no milk bottles. Water bottles must be marked with a ‘DW’ – drinking water for human consumption – or ‘TW’ – tank, tap or rain water for sanitary or animal use.
“It is just wonderful to see how our community pulls together and we appeal to all residents to support this worthy initiative by sparing a few litres,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.
“If every household donates just one litre per person living there, we could end up with more than 25 000 litres.

A 2km cross-country community event starting and ending at Lords and Legends to raise water supplies takes place on 24 January at 2pm.
Donate tap water in containers or bottled water. You can walk for the cause with no need to walk with the water.
There is no entry fee, but organisers request donations of containers of water. Participation is at your own risk and children must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs on leashes are welcome, but don’t forget your poop scooper and yellow bandana or ribbon for dogs who don’t like to be approached.
