Robbers collared in Isipingo

The suspects are alleged to be whoonga addicts who hang out at a notorious spot on Old Main Road.

Two alleged robbers were nabbed on Thie and Bally roads by members of Isipingo SAPS and two private security companies on Thursday evening, 3 December.

“The robbers, together with an accomplice, held up a customer at the Sasol Garage on Old Main Road and fled with his cellphone and wallet,” said Alpha Alarms communications officer, Krishnee Naidoo.

“They ran in the direction of the Metro Police offices, with the victim and others in close pursuit. The fleeing robbers split up, with one headed towards Gopal Singh Road and the other two up Bally Road.”

Alpha Alarms response supervisor, Eric Pillay was alerted by the commotion and apprehended one robber at gunpoint.

When he searched the robber, he found various sharp and potentially dangerous implements including kitchen knives, cardboard cutter and scissors in his backpack.

Isipingo SAPS members responded swiftly and the robber was handed over to them.

A second robber was caught on Bally Road by members of a private security company and SAPS, while the third got away.

“The suspects are alleged to be whoonga addicts who hang out at a notorious spot on Old Main Road and prey on workers alighting from taxis and buses.

Police are investigating further,” said Krishnee.
