Turn your breadtags into wheelchairs

Through the project, 330 wheelchairs were donated last year.

AS part of national disability month, from 3 November to 3 December, the Polystyrene Packaging Council (PSPC) encourages people to collect their breadtags, which are made from high impact polystyrene.

Once enough tags have been collected, they are worth their weight in money used for the purchase of a wheelchair for somebody who cannot afford it.

The successful ‘Breadtags for Wheelchairs’ project is administered by PSPC and has touched hundreds of lives around the country.

Currently in its eighth year, the project encourages people to collect breadtags which are then used to ‘purchase’ wheelchairs for people who need them, but are unable to afford them due to financial difficulties.

The PSPC has a network of volunteers consisting of teachers, learners, churches and individuals who all diligently collect breadtags in order to make a big difference in the lives of the less fortunate. During last year’s efforts alone, 330 wheelchairs were donated thanks to the success of the project.

The plastic bread closures are made from high impact polystyrene. Industry leaders pay for these breadtags in order to recycle them into seedling trays, cornices, skirtings, outdoor furniture, coat hangers, poles and decking.

Drop off your breadtags at St Winifreds Methodist Church, Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4pm and Fridays between 8.30am and 1pm. For more information call 031-916-4603.
