Man (21) gets 23 years for Beach Road murder

Car assisted in identifying suspect.

NJABULO Khanyase (21) was sentenced to 23 years’ imprisonment after the death of a holidaymaker, Andries Lombaard (66) in Toti in 2014.

Initally, Khanyase was charged with murder, but the charge was reduced to two counts – robbery with aggravating circumstances and culpable homicide for which he received 15 years and eight years respectively. He was sentenced in the Durban High Court on Friday, 23 October.

The incident occurred on 9 September, 2014 while Lombard was walking along the promenade on the beach.

“He was attacked and robbed. He fought off his assailant and sustained cuts on his arms and wrist. With the help of a witness, he managed to reach his block of flats, where he collapsed in the parking area,” said Toti SAPS communications officer, Capt Charlene van der Spuy.

Lombard died at the scene. A case of murder was opened and investigated by Toti SAPS’ Det Cst Pearl Dunn.

“After intensive investigation with the help of colleagues, car guards in the area where the incident occurred assisted in the identification of a suspect and Khanyase was arrested on 17 October, 2014.”
