Scholarship, exchange plan to enhance learning

Students advised to engage with their respective universities to apply.

TWO hundred students of eThekwini will get the opportunity of a lifetime to embark on an international student scholarship and exchange programme.

Interested learners are advised to engage with their respective universities to apply. The closing date is 30 November.

This comes after a memorandum of agreement was signed between the Diplomatic Corps in KwaZulu-Natal, Office of the Premier, Department of Education and eThekwini Municipality.

Mayor James Nxumalo encouraged students to take advantage of this opportunity as it will enhance learning. “Learners accepted in this programme will learn new skills, gain international exposure and experience. It will ensure a competitive advantage. The targeted learners are post-graduate and undergraduate students as well as those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.”

The criteria for qualification differ according to the host country and the university. The city will play a co-ordinating role to support learners who require funding. These include costs relating to medical assessments, passports and visas, travelling to embassies, amount required by students on departure, monthly allowances and emergencies related to travelling.

Other costs will be carried by the funders.

“We aim to identify and develop funding opportunities for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds, promoting career development and scarce skills, empowering youth, developing skills and facilitating the exchange of information and innovative ideas coupled with experiencing different cultures,” said senior manager of eThekwini Municipal Academy, Thomas Mketelwa.

Learners are encouraged to approach their respective universities to get information on the programmes on offer.

Interested individuals are advised to contact eThekwini Municipal Academy on 031-311-3192.
