It’s cherry-bell time at ABC

Fun and fancy dress are the order of the day.

THE Cherry-Bell is one of the women’s favourite competitions of the year at Amanzimtoti Bowls Club.

Fun and fancy dress are the order of the day, and even the damp start to the morning didn’t dampen their spirits.

Despite various handicaps imposed, Doreen Salmond and Elmarie Young won prizes for the most touchers, and Robyn Hutton, Joan van Rensburg and Kathy Harding won the bowls-bingo. Julie Sutherland, Jackie Holdrick and Betty Sawyer won the bowls competition, with Jane Coetzee, Adrienne Robbins and Talla Stephens-Viviers runners-up; and Noreen Butler, Tokkie de Kock and Linda McGregor third.

Maureen Griffin won the fancy dress competition, and the runner-up was Tokkie de Kock in her blonde wig. Linda McGregor won the wine hamper donated by Booth’s Bottle Store, and there were lots of other prizes, too numerous to mention. After a lovely lunch prepared by Brunchies, the girls rocked the club to the sounds of Alfie and Denise Bingham’s disco. Huge thanks must go to Robyn Hutton who organises this party every year, and to sponsors Jerry Gertzen of Orange River Cellars, Clearwater Spur, Lords and Legends, Victory KwikSpar and to members for donations.

UGC is proud to announce that 15 more members have qualified as PN markers, to bring the total to 20. Certificates and badges were presented by the club president, Alec Stirzaker to Pam Chalder-Royle, Stella Erasmus, Jackie Holdrick, Alan McGregor, Peter Callaghan, Neil Oberholzer, Andrew Pearce, Glen Scorgie, Tony Darley, Jennifer Greenslade, Shawn Sutherland, Dave McMillan, Herman van Zyl, Karen Shepherd and Wessie van der Westhuizen. The club appreciates their willingness to serve the club in this vital way.

On the more serious side of bowls, the men’s 2016 drawn fours kicked off with five games from round one being played. Les John, Clive Frank, Al McGregor and Jeff van Belkum beat Coy Schrauwen, Snoopy Brown, Pete Shepard and Leon van Rensburg; Don Saunders, Steve Evenwel, Gustav Somers and Herman van Zyl lost to Glen Scorgie, John Hewgill, Vish Studinski and Martin Birch; Jerry Gertzen, Neville Roscoe, Denny Denysschen and Mike Pitchers lost to Dave Gardner, Adie Fuller, Bobby Henderson and Ian McDonald. Greg McLeod, Ken Leech, Mike Roberts and Ben Venter lost to Vince Marriott, Peter Barnes, Alf Bingham and Trevor Zulch; Gerald Chalder-Royle, Alec Stirzaker, Guelfo Cobianchi and Peter Snyman beat Ian Shearer, Tony Cam, Keith Berry and Greg Veldtman.

The winners of the women’s trips were Doreen Salmond, Jane Coetzee and Adrienne Robbins with 4+34. Robyn Hutton, Denise Bingham and Amanda Ninow were second and Pam Chalder-Royle, Noreen Butler and Maggie Robertson won second session. Val de Kok won the 100 board and the ‘spider’, which collected R123.70 for Hospice.

The popular Victory KwikSpar inter-club mixed 2-4-2 was won by Pete Shepard and Amanda Ninow, with Glen Scorgie and Jackie Holdrick being runners-up. Julie and Shawn Sutherland won first session, and Marion Crouch and Micky Roche won second session. Maureen Griffin won the lucky draw, and many others won free drinks, so grateful thanks go to Denise and Allan Hawkins for their generous sponsorship, and to Duncan Wright for organisation.

The team of Marion Crouch, Doreen Salmond, Leigh Callaghan and Adrienne Robbins took first prize in the women’s mutton this month. Second were Pam Chalder-Royle, Val de Kok, Jackie Holdrick and Bernie Bretherton. First session went to Noreen Butler, Michelle Pitchers, Gladys Hughes and Maureen Griffin; and second session was won by Heather Brown, Tokkie de Kock, Kathy Cox and Lys McDonald.

Men’s mutton winners were Greg McLeod, Clive Frank, Guelfo Cobianchi and Brian Crause. In second place were Vince Marriott, Dennis Hughes, Mike Roberts and Ben Venter. Mervyn Conway, Andy McDonald, Lofty van Tonder and Ashley Allard won first session, and Alec Stirzaker, Mike Groom, Rob Troughton and Mike Pitchers took the second session.

Congratulations to two Toti BC novices, Kokkie de Kock and Wessie van der Westhuizen on getting through to the quarter-finals of the Berea novice pairs, and keeping the Toti flag flying high at all levels of the game. Good luck to them and to the two women’s novice pairs teams playing round one in the games next weekend.

Neville Roscoe won the 100 board at TGIF, and Denise Bingham was present to collect the member’s draw, so the pot goes back to R100 next week. Mike Goldstone’s number came out in the key draw, but it didn’t fit and the pot remains R1,000 next time.

A reminder that C green closed for annual refurbishment on Tuesday, 27 October for about six weeks, and A green will only re-open around mid-November. Unfortunately due to competitions being played on B green this coming weekend, there will be no rinks available for social bowls. Last but not least, birthday greetings go to Beni Chirkoot, Danie Els, Gustav Somers, Ray Robinson, Brad Cox and Boet Els.
