Rugby club scrums for Snodey

He has been a stalwart member of the club for more than 25 years.

“In regards to the request in the South Coast Sun, we at Amanzimtoti Rugby Club would love to be involved in anything to do with George Snodey and will support anything that you wish to call on us to assist with. He is truly a hero in our eyes.”

This is the response received by My Sapphire CommUnity from Cliff Uppink, chairman of Amanzimtoti Rugby Club, after a ‘letter to the editor’ was published in the Sun. It is just one of many offers of support, and donations to the fundraiser set-up for George Snodey continue to stream in.

While his recovery from a serious accident four weeks ago is progressing well, George is not yet able to return work. The Amanzimtoti Rugby Club is represented on the fundraising committee set-up to support George, and will be hosting an event to present George with a Community Hero Award, set to take place in a few week’s time when he has sufficiently recovered from his injuries.
George has been a stalwart member of the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club for more than 25 years, and the club is grateful for his dedication not only as a player, but as a committee member and fundraiser.

“George has been an active member and player at Amanzimtoti Rugby Club for many years now. His passion has mostly been the running of the 3rd ‘dial a side’ ballies team. For many years now, he has made countless telephone calls to field a team to honour a league fixture. It should be noted that all telephone calls have been at his own expense. I can recall on a number of occasions where

George stood by ‘his’ team selection when receiving flack from the committee about players. The 3rd team has won a number of league divisions, which can safely be attributed to George. I had the honour of playing in many third team games with him, where he was renowned for his defence and side step.

The club took on a new committee in 2015 and George agreed to be co-opted on to the committee for fundraising and fundraise he did. I will never forget his one saying at committee meetings when asked how he does it. His reply was “if you do not sponsor us, you had better wear a bullet proof vest”. George’s tenacity has allowed the club to reach new heights in 2015 with the recruitment of players and more. George has indicated that if we continue on this path we could win the Premier Division in 2016,” said Cliff.
