Raffle to fund burn victim’s care

Tickets cost R5 and all Warner Beach Prep pupils have been given raffle sheets.

Two-year-old Willow was scalded with hot water in April after she pulled at the cord of a kettle and the water doused the right side of her face and body. She sustained first, second and third degree burns to her face, ear and arm.

Her recovery has not been easy. Burn victims wear pressure garments while their scars heal and Willow has to keep hers on for up to 13 hours a day, for more than a year.

“She has become extremely resistant to wearing the garment and every time I start putting the silicone sheets on, she cries. It now takes both myself and my husband Jan to get it on her,” said her mother, Lorna. “To think there is still another 10 months of this is heart-wrenching for us. It already feels like it’s been an eternity and I feel so sorry for her.”

To aid the family financially, Warner Beach Prep has generously offered to help them fundraise by hosting a raffle on Willow’s behalf called ‘Warners for Willow’.

“Tickets cost R5 and all Warner Beach Prep pupils have been given raffle sheets. We decided to rather go through the school, as the raffle will be better organised and we have had better prizes donated.

We have some huge prizes on offer, including a hamper from Oh So Heavenly to be won. People have been so generous and we thank them.”

The raffle concludes at the end of September, with all monies to be paid in by 30 September.

If all raffle sheets are sold, Lorna is confident the amount raised will be substantial enough to cover all Willow’s expenses. “We will not have to do any more fundraising, which would be fantastic,” she said.

The pupil who sells the most tickets will be awarded a trophy by Willow’s parents at a special assembly.

To buy a ticket, either contact a pupil or the school on 031-916-1146.
