Matchplay winner emerges at UGC

Everyone is reminded that it's Sonny's big day next Saturday, 29 August - the fundraising day has arrived at last.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) has a new matchplay champion in the form of Lindani Mthiyane.

Six UGC guys played on Saturday with the ‘sparrows’ to eliminate their partners, playing again on Saturday after the competition to get a winner.

Rob Small, Saga Reddy and Lindani Mthiyane played together, with Lindani coming out the eventual winner at the end. Congratulations to Lindani on his achievement and to Rob and Saga as well for making it through to the final.

UGC’s ‘boys’ played in their respective tournaments last weekend with only Tim Clark making the ‘cut’ and playing for the full four days in the Wyndham Championships in North Carolina. Tim finished T43 at -7 with the winner, Davis Love III, ten shots ahead on -17. The best South African was Charl Schwartzel and he ended his tournament at T3 at -15. Next weekend is The Barclays being played in Edison, New Jersey – not sure if Tim’s playing in that one and on the Web.com Tour it’s the (WinCo Foods) Portland Open at Pumpkin Ridge CC (isn’t that a great name for a golf course?) in North Plains, Oregon which is Garth Mulroy’s territory. The European Tour hosts the Czech Open this week.

Wednesday’s Eagle Canyon Spur, Galleria sponsored competition welcomed visitors ‘evergreen’ Bob Duncan, Julien Le Pront, Rita Habenicht and Josef Reiber to the individual stableford format. Nelson Moonsamy won the competition on a count out from Chris Viljoen in 2nd place, both on 40 very good points. In 3rd spot was Derek Airey who counted out Dave ‘George’ Smit into 4th slot, Alwyn Stander in 5th and big Garth Wilyman into 6th place, all with 38 points.

Saturday was the Widenham trophy individual stableford and once again the club welcomed Bob Duncan and Charl Botes at prize giving. The winner of the Widenham trophy this month was Rob Finlay with 44 remarkable points, followed by Simon van den Bosch in 2nd spot, six shots behind Rob, with 38 points. In 3rd position was Dave Mulroy on a count out from Norman Mackay in 4th slot, both with 37. The jackpot was won by Rob Finlay with 11 points but the hidden birdie will be carried over – it’s still hiding on the 8th hole. Dave Kemp won the prize in the ‘non skills department’ – the attendance draw. Well done to you all.

Everyone is reminded that it’s Sonny’s big day next Saturday, 29 August – the fundraising day has arrived at last. There are many prizes to be won with copious amounts of wine to be won too. All members who have pledged prizes and so on for this day, bring them to the club sometime during the week. Let’s hope the weather plays along and that it’s a perfect day for golf. Good luck to everyone – both members and visitors alike – enjoy your day at Umkomaas.

Good luck and best wishes to all UGC’s winners of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge (at club level) who all play on Sunday, 30 August. The women play at Royal Durban and the men at Selborne. May your drives be long and straight and your putts in the hole.

As always, the Geriatrics play on Tuesdays and Fridays, meeting at 7am to tee off at 7.15am. They would love you to join them on these days. Contact Graham on 083-325-5705 and Keith on 083-305-5740.

KidzGolf is still on Saturday mornings (during the school term only) between 8am and 9am. Take your youngsters along to learn the right way to play golf with lessons on etiquette as well. Teaching children from a young age is paramount as they learn to play golf the right way without any ‘bad’ habits creeping in. The coaches look forward to welcoming you to the club.
