The School for the Hearing Impaired started the new week with a freshly-painted admin block and a new veggie garden, thanks to the Mormon Helping Hands organisation.

Volunteers were from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints congregation.

“We do various projects throughout the year, which we try and complete by the second weekend in August,” said chairman of Mormon Helping Hands, Dianne Blower.

“Usually we do a project a month, but the school was such a big project, it took us four months to clean out the drains, clean the kitchen, clean the garden and re-make the beds to plant seeds, and re-paint the admin block.”

While doing three-hours-a-week community service in the admin block, Dianne realised the pupils were not getting enough food and saw various other needs. This prompted her to add the school as one of the church’s projects.

“The idea is help the school and pupils sustain themselves. We urgently need seedlings, shade cloth and chicken wire for the garden.”
