Don't forget the club's fund raising day on Saturday, 29 August - this is the biggest day on the club's calendar - do give your support.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) thanks Eagle Canyon Spur at the Galleria for their support.

Johan Keet has been so generous with banners, vouchers and so on and it’s guaranteed that all the golfers receiving the vouchers appreciate and thoroughly enjoy their meal at the Spur, with the help of a voucher or two.

The SCR league women travel down to Port Shepstone next Sunday, 16 August to play in their South Coast regional league matches against Port Shepstone. UGC wishes them all the best of luck – travel safely and win or lose, enjoy the game.

The men are also active next weekend, the Allerton league team plays at Umkomaas on Sunday. Home course advantage is a good thing, guys so play well and enjoy your matches.

Starting on Thursday, 13 August, it’s the big one – the PGA Championships at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin. Tim Clark will be playing there and in Springfield, Missouri Garth Mulroy will play in the Price Cutter Charity Championships. Club members send best wishes to both UGC ‘boys’.

Wednesday’s competition was sponsored by Eagle Canyon Spur and the club welcomed Julien Le Pront and Mike Harvard to the individual stableford. This week it was won by Barrie Taylor on a count out from second placed Richard Andersson, both on 39 points. In third place was Roddy Mc Gibbon (welcome back, Roddy) with 36 points and scooping the last prize was Deneys Williamson on 35 points.

Saturday’s competition was a fourball better ball stableford and the club welcomed visitors Bob Duncan and Mike Harvard but there was also a great group of players, the Klip Gnomads who were the life of prize-giving. There was quite a good field on Saturday, with Jimmy Spear and Eric Morsner taking their vouchers for first place on 45 points, followed closely by Dave Mulroy and Annette Gillett in second place with 44 points. Simon van den Bosch and Nelson Moonsamy slipped into third slot ahead of John Gillett and Bob Duncan on the count out, both teams on 43 points. John Gillett took home the jackpot with 12 points but the hidden birdie will be carried over to next week, as it is still lost on the 17th hole. Kuben Naidoo had two 2-Clubs on both the fourth and ninth holes as did Jacques Hulley on the ninth hole.

This Saturday, 15 August is the eighth round of the Alliance league, so gather your teams and even if you don’t have an ‘official’ team in the league, players can still play in the alliance competition. Next Sunday, 16 August is Allerton league at UGC. Call the club for a tee time on 039-973-1042. Don’t forget the club’s fundraising day on Saturday, 29 August. This is the biggest day on the club’s calendar so give your support.

Looking ahead to Sunday, 30 August, it’s the Sanlam Cancer Challenge regional finals where the women play at Royal Durban and the men (South) play at Selborne. Diarise this important date. If you cannot play in this match, make sure you have the second-placed player to replace you. The onus is on the player and not the club to contact that player.

It was good to see a couple of new ‘kidz’ at KidzGolf last Saturday. All youngsters are welcome to go down and learn a thing or two about golf. The coaches would really like to see more ‘kidz’ on a Saturday morning between 8am and 9am at UGC.

The ‘Geriatrics’ play on Tuesdays and Fridays, gathering at 7am to tee off at 7.15am. Join them on these days by contacting Graham on 083-325-5705 or Keith on 083-305-5740.
