Toti tenpin bowlers prove to be high rollers

Junior’s league sees many familiar names coming through as more and more bowler’s families get involved in the game, top of the list was Amy Holmes from Chloe Elbourne and Mitchell Hooper.

AS the second half of the year proceeds, everything in the tenpin bowling world escalates towards the inter-provincials with various qualifying tournaments having to be squeezed into the calendar.

A High-Rollers tournament scheduled in Johannesburg, which was to be used as a World Cup qualifying event, saw four KZN and Amanzimtoti Tenpin Bowling Club (ATBC) bowlers given automatic qualification into the event.

Andrew Cyster, Jivi Sewcharan, Bronwen Elbourne and Stacey-Lee Hooper received this, while a further six bowlers travelled to participate in the event. After bowling 30 games over two days, Toti had four bowlers in the top 10 – Ricky O’Hare finished fourth, Andrew fifth, Theo Govender eighth and Stacey-Lee ninth.

On the local front, ATBC has reached the half-way-point in the Taxi Trios league year and prizegiving was conducted on 3 August. ‘2 Hookers and a Str8 Guy’ were run-away winners from Pulse in second, 10 points clear of High 5’s in third. Andrew Cyster high scored on 251 and Stephan Sleigh, fresh back from holiday, bowled 241. On the women’s side, Tamika Matthew on 227 beat Janis Holmes on 209.

In the first round matches for the new season, some of the previously unfancied teams got off to a superb start with high scores from Theo Govender 258; Monty Cordingley 235; Dylan von Berkel and David Martin both on 234. Caitlin Botha on 221 was the highest scoring woman.

Soho league saw Katie Alberts win the month of July prize and she is leading the August field.

In the Wednesday Millenium league, Sewcharans won July but High Rollers are currently in the lead for August. Coenie Nienaber 238 and Jivi 236 were the high achievers.

Among the Thursday Dolphin Doubles, long-time leaders Three’s-a-Crowd came against the powerhouse P-Cats team and were unfortunately relegated to second place when Double Trouble overtook them for the lead. High scores bowled came from Ricky 237, Pierre du Plooy 226 and 225, Stephan 243 and 237, Morne de Wet 237, Vish Studzinski, (fresh from hand surgery) 225, Stacey-Lee 232 and Lorraine 203.

Junior’s league sees many familiar names coming through as more and more bowlers’ families get involved in the game. Top of the list was Amy Holmes from Chloe Elbourne and Mitchell Hooper.

Phantom result for July is first Janis Holmes, second to Uys van Aardt. Staff won by John Short from Rachel Hanekom. August week 1 results Phantom Danielle Grobbelaar 401, Craig Hooper 381 and Janis 364.

One of the most exciting tournaments, interleague, was held last week. This is where each of Dolphin’s leagues selects four players to bowl against the other leagues. There are four rounds of this event held each year with the winning league having bragging rights for the following year.

Eight teams participated and ATBC was honoured to have a rare guest appearance from Roy Prince who had agreed to be a secret weapon for the Soho league. This had the desired effect as Soho tied for first place with Taxi Trio’s 1 on 104 points.

Upcoming events at Dolphin Bowl are the masters inter-provincial taking place from 16 to 21 August from 9am to 4pm daily. Five teams of the best senior (over 50 years) bowlers will be competing over several disciplines. Members of the public are most welcome to visit Dolphin to watch and cheer on the participants.
