City hands over orphans’ new home

They were living in a one-room mud house.

THE lives of nine orphans in Folweni were transformed when eThekwini Municipality partnered with local businesses to build a new home for them.

The orphans were living in an one-room mud house.

A handover was held on Saturday, 18 July. Through Operation Sukuma Sakhe, the nine orphans were identified as living a life of poverty after the death of their grandmother.

The city, in partnership with local businesses, built them a new home.

Boxer Superstore offered to employ the older siblings and also offered the family free groceries.

Mayor James Nxumalo encouraged public-private partnerships in the quest to better the lives of ordinary citizens. “The city needs more people like Madevu Sabelo who saw a need and intervened by working together with the municipality. There is no better gift than this on Nelson Mandela’s birthday where we see orphans stepping into a better life,” said Nxumalo.
