Lovu NPO stages production about whoonga dangers

Show targets school children and young people.

A NON-PROFIT organisation, Mvuzo Family of Arts in Lovu Township is fine-tuning its show, ‘The Wedding’ which focuses on the dangers of whoonga, which will be staged at the Catalina Theatre in August.

The production focuses on Masiya Nxumala, a graduate lawyer who dreamed of marriage and a family, but instead ended up in Whoonga Park due to his addiction to whoonga,” said Mphathy Shozi.

The NPO which was started by Mphathy focuses on acting, dance, poetry and storytelling.

“We started in 2010 and focus on uplifting young people and their talents through the performing arts.”

Mphathy wrote the show as he is concerned about the growing dangers of whoonga, both in the city and local township. “This drug is destroying young people. To research my show, I visited Whoonga Park for background information.”

The show will be staged at Catalina Theatre from Tuesday to Saturday, 4 to 8 August. It is an hour-and-a-half long and gets its key message across through poetry, music and acting.

“I want young people to see the show, especially school children, as they are the most in danger.”

Mphathy’s interest in acting was sparked while he was a pupil at Siyabonga Secondary School. “Other students approached me to start a drama class. Seven others soon joined in and our love for the performing arts developed.”

On completing matric, he had to find a job, but continued to dabble in acting in his spare time. To date, this will be the third show to be staged by the NPO.

Tickets to ‘The Wedding’ are only R35 each. For more details contact Mphathy on 0735363340.
