Sports festival to keep youth on right track

The festival consists of a soccer, netball and basket tournament plus cultural activities.

A youth sports festival, hosted by the KwaMakhutha and Surrounding Sports, Cultural Development Initiative (KSSCDI), takes place at Sesifikile sport grounds on 13 and 14 June at 8am, with the finals on 16 June at 9am.

The festival consists of a soccer, netball and basket tournament plus cultural activities.

“This event will showcase sporting talents of KwaMakhutha and surrounding residents to encourage a sporting culture in our community and to draw the youth away from activities that negatively affect their lives,” said project manager, Sidwell Mlumbi.

“The goals of the event are to create awareness about substance abuse, prevent crime, empower the youth through education, sports and cultural activities, curb teenage pregnancy and HIV/Aids in our society and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

The KSSCDI was established to become an integral part of the community, with the aim of co-ordinating development programmes to redress the moral degeneration challenges prevalent in the society. The organisation aims to achieve this through programmes that discourage the youth and community from nefarious activities, and introduce a culture of discipline through education, sports and cultural activities.

We will also celebrate 20 years of democracy and commemorate the Soweto 16 June uprising on the day of the finals under the theme ‘Crime and drug awareness, and motivating the youth about education’.

We will incorporate different stakeholders from NGOs, CBOs, the religious sector, private sector and government institutions to convey our theme.”
