Raging Toti scores try fest over rampant Rhinos

Big Tyron “T-Bone” Trembath got the vote for his massive contribution both in the scrums and in general play.

A SIZEABLE crowd at Hutchison Park on Saturday bore witness to another fine display from Toti Rugby Club’s first team, as they comprehensively beat the visiting Zululand Rhinos from Empangeni by 60 points to 14.

Rhinos, who are a hugely improved team from last year’s outfit, have in their previous games this season, got themselves off to good starts in three of their preceding four games and have led at the break in these games, only to lose narrowly to teams like College Rovers, Varsity College and Crusaders.

Toti, however, were not going to be so generous, and in the opening 20 minutes ran in three superb tries with the bonus point fourth try coming just before the end of the first half. The visiting team seemed somewhat shell-shocked by this turn of events and although they did keep possession for fairly long periods in the half, they only managed a return of 7 points for their efforts.

With the home side going into the break with a 29-7 lead, the match was effectively over as a contest, and the second half was all about believing in and keeping to the structure and system, so as not to be drawn into a loose game which often happens when the game seems to be in the bag early on. This Toti did superbly, and were rewarded by a 31 point second half harvest, with Rhinos scoring a consolation try to leave the full time score at 60-14.

Among the standout performers on the day among the forwards were Sharks player Tera Mtembu who was magnificent at eighth man, as well as Mike Uppink who is making a well-timed return to his best form. It was, however, Big Tyron ‘T-Bone’ Trembath got the vote for his massive contribution both in the scrums and in general play. The backline man of the match was stand-in skipper Louis Joubert for yet another solid display in the mid-field. Trembath and Joubert each received the Eagle Canyon Spur man of the match awards for their efforts.

Toti now makes the trip to Pietermaritzburg on Saturday to take on UKZN Impi at their Pete Booysen Park headquarters at UKZN’s Maritzburg campus. Scheduled kick-off times are 1.30pm for the seconds and 3pm for the first team. The third team will host Pinetown at Amanzimtoti on Friday, 22 May scheduled to kick off at 7pm.
