Water restored after theft causes collapse

Steel brackets were stolen from a pipeline on Friday, 17 April.

FOLLOWING the theft of steel brackets of a 375mm steel water pipeline, causing it to collapse in Athlone Park on Friday morning, 17 April, ward 97 councillor Andre Beetge confirmed on his Facebook page about an hour ago (Monday, 20 April) that water is being restored to the affected areas.

“Following a site inspection with officials at the Booth Road reservoir, both pumps were relieved of air locks and the reservoir immediately started filling up again – with both pumps at full capacity, neighbours reported water flowing within 20 minutes,” said Beetge.

Areas affected at the weekend were parts of Athlone Park, Galleria Shopping Mall, some parts of Orient Hills and the industrial area surrounding the mall.
Owner of Anchors Boutique Lodge in Reservoir Rise, Athlone Park, Greg Thomas has also been affected by the vandalism.

“I have a number of foreign guests staying at my lodge who have been inconvenienced. However, the management and senior staff of Amanzimtoti Golf Club have allowed my guests to use the shower facilities at the club. I thank the club for helping us out.” he said.

“Acts of vandalism taking place in our communities cannot be addressed by the municipality and police alone. They require vigilance from us as community members and we must not look away when we know that our relatives, neighbours and friends are involved in damaging council property,” said eThekwini Municipality’s head of communications, Tozi Mthethwa.

The municipality urges residents to continue reporting illegal water connections, vandalism or theft of municipal infrastructure to 080-13-13-013, email eservices@durban.gov.za, SMS 43554or fax 031-311-8220.
For any water related queries, contact the 24-hour call centre on 080-1313-013.
