Black mamba among Non-Stop Dusi challenges

Brothers, Steve and Allister Black ran the route to raise funds for Faron-Mae Fisher.

AT the Non-Stop Dusi on Friday, 6 March, the Black brothers, Steve and Allister ran 117.2km in 14h 37min to raise much-needed funds for Toti’s Faron-Mae Fisher.

The duo ran on trail paths from start to finish. No less than 11 times they had to cross the river by swimming, as they either came up against rock faces or their path went in the wrong direction.

“At the halfway mark, they were running down the side of the river well-known to paddlers as ‘Hippo Rocks’. Steve was running in front and Allister was hot on his heels when suddenly Steve stopped dead still and Allister knew that there was a problem. They had disturbed a black mamba on the path. The mamba stood straight up and literally looked down at them. A black mamba can stand up on the last third of its body. They both froze, fortunately this undesirable creature relaxed and slithered away into the long grass. They carried on running,” said Toti Canoe Club’s, Gary Albers.

Some paddlers had reported seeing mambas just below Hippo Rocks moving around in the water.

Steve and Allister who are renowned for these challenges took this on for Faron Mae who is living with Glycogen Storage Disease type 0.

“Hopefully through the Toti Canoe Club, the Toti public and those who are touched by Faron Mae’s story and who generously gave to the cause, the load can be lifted ever so lightly for her parents.”
