Lane records tumble as KZN tenpin tourneys contested

The KZN committee and dolphin staff deserves congratulations for an extremely well organised and run tournament.

AS stated in last week’s Amanzimtoti Tenpin Bowling Club report, the province’s top bowlers all descended on Dolphin Bowl to contest the KZN mixed doubles qualifier and competition was even more intense than anticipated.

Forty of the province’s top bowlers congregated to bowl a 10 game series to determine the best of the best.

The bowlers were divided into two squads, the first starting at 9am and finishing at 1pm while the second squad commenced at 1.30pm and finished at 3.30pm.

The first squad were very evenly matched and no team was able to break away from the following pack. After five games, first place was only ahead of second by one pin, while third was a further two pins behind. They continued with the battle to the end and after all was said and done, Louiza and Frik were top on 4,207, followed by Lorraine and Logan on 4,202, Alicia and Zander on 4,196 and Stephan(ie) and Billy on 4183.

The afternoon squad then took to the lanes and produced a spell of bowling that was truly mindblowing with three lane records being eclipsed by the younger bowlers. First Shabba Bhagwandin bowled a 245 on lane five, then Theo Govender, 247 on lane nine but best of all was Jivi Sewcharran claiming Shabba’s new record with 278 on lane five. All three are under 23 and are still considered juniors in tenpin bowling. Thank goodness – imagine what they will bowl when they grow up.

The second squad was where it was all happening and huge numbers were being bowled. Shabba started off slowly but then he and sister Sue proceeded to show the rest the way home, finishing on 4,507 pins with Tamika Matthew and Pierre du Plooy in second, 127 pins behind. Third was Gita Soorjlal and Jivi in third 62 pins behind second.

In the master class (+50years of age) husband-and-wife Colin and Gwen Hayward were narrow winners from Louiza Nienaber and Frik van Niekerk with Lorraine and Logan in third.

Men bowled a total of 14 games in excess of 225, with Jivi getting five of them, Shabba had four, Theo two, Logan, Pierre and Ricky one each. Louiza and Tamika on the women’s side also beat the 225 mark. Tamika and Stacey-Lee both had a 203.

The KZN committee and Dolphin staff deserve congratulations on an extremely well organised and run tournament.

Dolphin Bowl is now back to a full league programme again but are sure there are going to be some bowlers feeling the effects from their endeavours of yesterday.
