Surf conditions test competitors at lifesaving champs

Tyron Pontes (WD) won the U19 boys competition with four wins (24 points).

MONSTER surf tested junior and senior competitors in all events at the Hypersure KZN South surf lifesaving competition on Sunday, 18 January.

Despite the surf conditions, South Coast competitors showed off their mettle and are all fired up to win gold in upcoming KZN junior and senior champs.

Seniors competition results:

Hosts of the 2015 Hypersure KZN South lifesaving competition, Warnadoone Surf Lifesaving Club (WD) won the overall seniors title with 349 points; Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club (WK) placed second on 174; Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club (Sc) scored 68 and Amanzimtoti Surf Lifesaving Club (Toti) ended on 16 points.

Twenty-four events were staged in total, with most competitors taking part in all disciplines, something has to be said of the fitness and stamina of the South Coast lifeguards.

Warners Keagan Kruger won senior men overall with two wins and one second place (16 points). In the senior women’s category, Lauren Felgate won overall with four first places (24 points).

In the Iron Man event: First Gene Prato (WK); second Brent Chiazarri (WD); third Brett Hadiaris (WD).

The craft rescue event, which is no longer part of the national championships, produced a spectacular tie between ‘Winkle’ and ‘Warners’ with WD in third.

Juniors competition results:

Thirty-nine events were staged in total and the juniors literally took the beach and surf by storm with no fear of three to four metre waves breaking on them.

Winklespruit juniors won overall with an aggregate of 249 points followed by Warnadoone on 199; Scottburgh on 180 and Toti on 47 points.

Tyron Pontes (WD) won the U19 boys competition with four wins (24 points).

Terri Prato (WK) won the U19 girls competition with first places in all five individual events and two team events she competed in.

Tim Robinson (Sc) won the U17 boys event with three first places and one third place.

Dana Erasmus (WD), U17 girls had three wins and won overall.

Kegan Lloyd (WK) won the U15 boys with one first and two second places.

Kelly Fell (WK) with four first place finishes won in the U15 girls category.

South Coast juniors will again compete in the KZN Junior championships hosted by Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club on Sunday, 1 February.
