Police ‘too busy to respond’

She called back about 20 minutes later, to be told the police were still busy.

A Toti resident was left fuming after police apparently informed her they “were too busy” to attend to her compliant.

Amanda Beldhuizen contacted Toti police station on Wednesday, 3 December at about 9am to report three intruders in her Robin Hood Road yard, but the woman who answered her call said the police were too busy to attend and refused to give her name.

She called back about 20 minutes later, to be told the police were still busy.

After she contacted the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO), the police responded at about 9.40am.

She said when the police arrived and she informed them of the intruders, their response was “what must we do about it?”.

“This is ridiculous,” said Amanda. “If they had responded in time, they would have caught them. This is the fifth time in two weeks the same people have tried to break into my house and the police aren’t doing anything about it.”

On Saturday, 29 November a 17-year-old boy and his friend were accosted by two gunmen, when they were returning from the shop in Lower Illovo.

His mother, who preferred to remain anonymous, said after robbing them of their cellphones, the men pointed the firearm at the boys and pulled the trigger, but the gun misfired.

Her son’s friend’s mother contacted the police to report the incident, but the police said the robbers would be long gone and so they didn’t take the boys’ statements.

In response to the SUN’s query, Toti SAPS said there are measures in place to address complaints against the police with regards to service delivery.
