Toti GC to plan for future at next week’s AGM

THE Amanzimtoti Golf Club annual general meeting is scheduled for this Monday, 24 November at 5.30pm in the lounge.

All members are urged to attend this meeting and be part of planning the way forward.

The committee nomination lists are up on the board, but to date not too many names are gracing the page, so nominate those you wish to have at the helm for the year to come.

There is a major issue at the course at the moment, namely the constant flow of sewage which fouls the river daily. The matter is under investigation. This is not a pleasant situation at all, as the possible impact on the birdlife and fish life is yet to be realised. Added to this, the river enters the ocean alongside a public beach. Here’s hoping the powers-that-be will manage to stop the pollution of our river soonest.

On a lighter note, the comment of the month must be “I didn’t know golf balls floated”, which on closer inspection turned out to be a golf ball perched on top of a huge chunk of unmentionable which was floating down the river.

Members will have seen the boards in the pub showing details of the driving range which the pro shop wishes to erect on the cricket field site. Study their proposals carefully and indicate on the sheets attached whether or not you are in favour of the development, and if you are, which proposal you would like to see implemented.

On Wednesday afternoon 33 players took part in the IPS competition, with Michael Tate coming in with a superb 44 points for first place, followed by Shaun Roberts on 40 and Brian Algate with 38 points. Johan Roux, he of the 27 points for nine holes last Friday, didn’t have as good a game this week and only managed 37 points for his 18 holes, which was however enough to earn him fourth place.

On Friday Tommy McNaughton led home the nine hole sundowner field with 21 points, with Bruce Whiting beating Thomo Langa to take second place on 20 by a count out.

The women hosted a few up-and-coming young women golfers on Saturday afternoon, with the format being a threeball alliance. The visitors, Jess Surety and Britt Berger, made full use of their third player for the afternoon, namely Liz Donald, and took the competition on 82 points. In second place were the team of Jacqui Porrill, Sue Conlan and Wladzia Oliver on 80. Third spot went to Ina de Boer, Lynette Roodt and Jebby Dyson with 76 points. Nobody reached the nearest the pin green, and there were no two-clubs.

Combined stableford was the order of the day for the men, with Hu Turnbull and Brian Rhodes coming in first with 74 points, followed by Brian Stewart and Clive Fryer on 72 points. Third place went to Norbert Dupont and Peter Tierney on 69, who beat Sadeak and Faraan Khader by way of a count out.

The two nearest the pins winners were Gert Vosser (fourth) and Chris van Oudsthoorn (15th), and neither the jackpot nor attendance draw were won so these will carry over to next week.

Amanzimtoti welcomes all visitors to play a round of golf on the beautiful course. Call the pro shop on 031-902-4144 to book a tee off time.
