Prop gets call-up to Sharks Academy

The front rower is still waiting to hear back about his application for a bursary.

A Kingsway High School pupil has been accepted to the Sharks Rugby Academy for next year.

Lindo Ngobese (18), a grade 12 pupil and the first team captain, heard the good news on Monday, 1 September after attending trials and a fitness test at the Shark Tank the previous week.

“I was very surprised to hear I had made it,” he said. “At the trials I played my heart out and I wanted to show them I really wanted it. When I hadn’t heard anything by the weekend, I became worried and nervous.”

The front rower is still waiting to hear back about his application for a bursary. He will study towards a three-year sports management diploma.

“My day will consist of an one-and-a-half hour gym session in the morning, before going to lectures, then an afternoon training session on the field.

To give us game time, we will train with a club in the evenings and play in club competitions on the weekend. I hope to play for Toti,” said Lindo, who will continue to live with his parents in Athlone Park and travel to the stadium daily. He will also run out for the academy’s U19 and U21 teams.

He only started playing rugby when he moved to Kingsway High in grade 8.

“I enjoyed playing hockey and soccer in primary school and even made the KZN U13 team for hockey, but those sports came easy to me.

Rugby was more difficult and challenging to me and my coach, John Watt made me fall in love with the sport,” said the 93kg prop and hooker.

“My dream is to be a professional rugby player and that’s why I worked harder than the other players at trials. I’m willing to work hard, because I really want it.”
