Disaster teams on alert for cold front

Warning for gale-force winds and high seas.

The KZN MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube, has placed the province’s disaster management teams on alert as bad weather caused by an approaching cold front is expected to hit parts of KZN this weekend.

According to Dube-Ncube, the worsening weather conditions caused by the cold front have increased chances of snowfall in areas like the Drakensberg, Kokstad and Bergville.

“We urge members of the public to be cautious, as the expected bad weather will have a big impact on those planning to travel this weekend. We also call on everyone to drive carefully, more especially along the N3 highway and take the necessary precautions should the weather turn bad suddenly.

Law enforcement agencies will also be present to assist motorists and we request that they follow all instruction issued by these agencies,” said Dube-Ncube.

“We appeal to the public to use electric heaters sparingly, as excessive use puts undue pressure on the grid. The better alternative is to use blankets to keep warm.”

The Met office in Durban said there will be no more snow over the weekend.

There is a warning for gale-force winds and high seas with waves in excess of four metres today and on Saturday, 30 August.
