More pollution taints bird park

AfriForum took a water sample from the stream on Thursday, 10 July.

More pollution, thought to have emanated from the Southgate Business Park, flowed into Amanzimtoti Bird Sanctuary last week.

This despite ongoing pleas from Toti Conservancy to eThekwini Municipality to fine the culprits and put a stop to it.

AfriForum took a water sample from the stream on Thursday, 10 July after the municipality informed the Toti community that the pollution issue was solved and action had been taken against the guilty parties.

“A member of the community sent photos to AfriForum taken of the stream on Thursday, 17 July. You can clearly see an oily product and foam floating in the stream. We were reliably informed that the guilty party is the manufacturer of the Black Chic Hair products in the Southgate Business Park,” said Chris Fourie, provincial co-ordinator for AfriForum in KZN.

“Ronnie Naicker of eThekwini Pollution and Environment confirmed on Friday morning, 18 July via an email that his department is responding to the issue. AfriForum and the community are fed-up with eThekwini’s empty promises and will take on the problem themselves.

We will request the Environmental Management Inspectors (Blue Scorpions) to take action against eThekwini Municipality in failing in their mandate to the Amanzimtoti community,” said Chris.

AfriForum plans to hold a protest action at the entrance of Southgate Business Park against the pollution of Toti’s rivers.

For more information about the protest action, SMS ‘Amanzimtoti’ to 45267. SMSes cost R1.
