Grass is vividly greener in Toti

My main concern though is the crime but I wonder if it's more fear than reality.

EDITOR – As someone who emigrated one year ago at the end of this month to South Africa, and to Amanzimtoti, and as a regular reader of this paper, I was moved to write my observations.

First off, my new family which I’ve married into have been fantastic.

The Afrikaans culture is so welcoming, the fantastic food, humour and warmth has been second to none. The break from cold, wintry English weather and the beautiful beaches and outdoor activities has been marvellous. The South African people are truly friendly and hospitable.

My main concern though is the crime but I wonder if it’s more fear than reality. Nearly everyone I’ve met talks about crime but believe me, the grass is not greener in this respect. And some South Africans can be the worst ambassadors, so many have asked why have I moved here. Because of all the above and that it’s a stunning country. I remember meeting the Scottish woman at Makro who said ‘I’ll give you six months’. Well love, I’m still here and loving it.

The one thing I would change? The drivers and getting more police on the roads. Every day I get wound up by the dreadful drivers who drive without thought for others. The constant accidents should be educating people.

Anyway, that aside, it’s been an incredible year and South Africans are fantastic people living in a fantastic country. Here’s to the next!
