Teen romance leads to 60 years of wedded bliss

Wights have five children, 20 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

SHULTON Park couple, Colin (83) and Jeanette (79) Wight recently celebrated their milestone diamond wedding anniversary.

The Wights were married on 1 May, 1954 at the Methodist Church in Queens Terrace (now Rehoboth Church) in Doonside.

The couple met as teenagers on Boxing Day in 1949. “I met Colin when he came to my home with my sister’s blind date. From that day, we started seeing each other. He couldn’t stay away from me,” she laughed.

After their marriage they settled in Umbogintwini. Colin worked at AECI for over 15 years, later moved to other companies, before completing his working career at Gilbey’s Distillers in 1985.

Jeanette attributes their happy marriage to good living. “If you stick to your vows, you are able to work things out. Keeping close to family is also important.”

She advised young couples contemplating marriage today to get to know each other, before taking the big step of commitment.

Over the years, Jeanette has seen many changes in the area, having lived here since the age of seven.

The Wights have five children, 20 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. In their spare time they potter around the house and garden.
