Flood of donations turn the taps on for home’s water tanks

Wooden deck replaced with balau wood from Indonesia.

Two new water tanks were installed at the Jabulani Home for the Aged in Warner Beach on Thursday, 16 May.

The home was faced with the daunting task of raising R60,000 in the second half of last year to replace three asbestos drinking water tanks with two 5,000 litre plastic tanks on the roof of the 12-storey building.

“We were told we are not allowed asbestos tanks and the galvanised pipes could crack the tanks,” said chairman of the Jabulani committee, Mike Cank.

A fundraising drive was kickstarted by Errol and Sharon-Ann Theron of the Kingsburgh Welfare Organisation of the Aged (Kwofta) executive committee in August, which saw the community dig deep into their pockets to donate towards the project.

Round Table Amanzimtoti 85 also donated one of the Jo-Jo tanks.

Besides donations from the public, residents of Jabulani also got stuck in to raise funds. A morning market raised R15,800 and a holiday raffle added R11,920 to the kitty.

“We thank the public for all the donations to allow us to replace the asbestos tanks with new ones,” said Mike.

“We also recently replaced our wooden deck with balau wood from Indonesia, thanks to donations from the public and we thank the people who contributed.”
