Ex-Toti biker stabbed in Bike Week mugging

Bikers have vowed never to return.

An ex-Toti resident was lucky to escape with his life after he stabbed four times in Margate during the Africa Bike Week.

Neville van Niekerk (52), an ex-Kuswag pupil now living in Roodepoort, was set upon by four muggers, who demanded his cellphone and wallet as he was walking from the Wimpy to Santana flats on Thursday night, 1 May.

His mother, Hettie, said two of the thugs ran away when Neville put up a fight, but the other two stabbed him twice in the back and once in the stomach and side.

“Covered in blood, Neville managed to walk to the flats and he collapsed in the lift,” said Hettie. “When he came to, he made it to his flat where his friends called for help.

He was in ICU for five days. He is still in hospital and is expected to fly back home on Friday.

I just want to warn Toti bikers what can happen at these events.”

Margate SAPS confirmed a man was stabbed four times on 1 May and said a case of assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm was being investigated.

Neville, who is the director of the Clearwater Harley Owners Group Chapter, travelled down to the bike week with his wife, Charmaine and 160 of his clubmates, who have vowed never to return to the Margate event after hearing about the incident.

“We are aware a member of the Harley-Davidson Clearwater Chapter was attacked on Thursday evening, 1 May in Margate and medical authorities confirmed that he is in recovery,” said marketing manager of Harley-Davidson Africa, Michael Carney.

“We await detailed information from the local police authorities and until we have all the relevant information, we are unable to speculate on the incident, as it may impact the investigation. We are working with local authorities to ensure appropriate precautions are in place for future events.

This incident took place outside of the event area, for which the local police is responsible. Security measures were taken within the Africa Bike Week event area.

We wish our valued Clearwater Chapter member a speedy recovery.”
