A GROUP of budding chefs graduated after a six-week cookery course at Amanzimtoti Child and Family Welfare Society on Tuesday, 29 April.
The project which is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund saw the women notch-up skills in basic cooking and baking.
“Most of the women come from our target communities. Our aim is to empower them with the necessary skills to become self-sufficient, to be able to generate an income for their families,” said welfare’s Poovan Naidoo.
The women have been kept busy by course co-ordinator, Doreen Goldschagg and have learnt to prepare a number of dishes, among them light meals, bread, muffins and cup cakes. They have also acquired icing and decorative skills; how to set a table and budgeting.
Past students of the Durban School for the Hearing Impaired have also participated in the course.
The project has received sufficient funding for a year. Classes have been well received and there is no cost. If anyone wants to participate, contact the welfare office on 031-903-5171.
