Mall manager retires

A total of 23 years as manager.

George Smith (74) has retired from managing the Kingsburgh Centre.

In the 23 years he has been at the helm, since 1985, he has seen many changes. “The centre was upgraded three times,” he said. “We have gone through difficult times and good times. In the 80s we had the bomb scares, which kept everyone on their toes.”

George and his wife, Anita moved to Warner Beach from Johannesburg in 1971, where they still reside. Their only son, Clinton (49) still lives in Kingsburgh and is the IT manager at Caxton.

Not keen to sit idle at home, George hopes to start a similar position in the near future. “Being at the centre every day took up so much of my time, I never had time for hobbies.

Over the years I have got to know many people at the centre and they have got to know me,” said George. “Especially the folks from Jabulani and the other old age homes, who do their collections at the centre.”
