God’s ‘Little’ Creatures – The humble Jumping Spider

The sight of these little fellows brings out the "squish" reaction in even the best of people and sometimes even strike terror in the hearts of even macho men.

But the fact is that these little spiders neither have to be killed nor even be feared. They are harmless and helpful little predators to have around the garden and even around the home, and like all spiders they loath biting humans, they will only bite as a last resort. They are useful predators and are excellent fly catchers, I always like having one or two of them living on my kitchen windowsill where they quite effectively help keep the flies under control, no need for fly sprays or poisons.

If you really have to get them out of your home please try not kill them, rather dust them off the wall onto a dustpan or even into a bottle, then find a spot in your garden where they can live.

These spiders are easy to identify as they have no web and have short stocky bodies with equally short but powerful legs. They feed on flies, bees and any other insect small enough to subdue, often taking down prey that’s more than twice their size. That’s what you call having and eye (or eight of them) bigger than your belly.
