Volunteers help strike-hit home

Strike was suspended on Wednesday.

Jona Vaughan Home does not need more volunteers to help with residents during a strike by its staff members. That’s the official word from Durban and Coastal Mental Health resident care co-ordinator, Marsh Chetty.
Most of the home’s staff contingent, which is outsourced, started a strike action on Monday, 14 April. The strike was suspended on Wednesday, 23 April. It is not clear what the striking workers ‘ demands are.
“We have quite a few volunteers who have come to our assistance, mostly the parents of our residents,” said Marsh.
“At this stage, we don’t need any more assistance. “Unfortunately the strike action has had a negative impact on the home. However, we are very appreciative of the efforts of the helpful group of volunteers.”
