New woods catapult Stone to IPS honours list

The men played a fourball alliance on Saturday, with two scores to count all round.

IT was great to see so many Amanzimtoti Golf Club members make a welcome return to the course on Saturday, with a good men’s field of 89 players, and 14 women competing in the women’s competition.

The weather has been superb of late – heat all day and very welcome rain at night.

This makes the course very interesting to play, as the rain has caused the rough to grow at a rapid rate, and the greens are holding better than they have for a long time.

The men played a fourball alliance on Saturday, with two scores to count all round.

Winners on a fine 99 points were the team of Wik van Wyk, Ben Viljoen, Ernie Crots and Ferdie Petzer. In second place were Rajendra Naidoo, Mervyn Naidoo, Sagren Reddy and Sadeak Khader on 96 points. Third spot went to Clive Hill, John van der Spuy, Grant Harris and Sean Flanagan on 95 on a count out.

Sagren Reddy picked up nearest the pin on the seventh, with the ever-present Jorgie Jorgensen nearest on the 17th. The jackpot was shared between Servaas van Niekerk and Murray Dalton, and the attendance prize was finally won by Mervyn Naidoo.

The women played IPS with a twist, and Charmain Stone made good use of her new woods to shoot a tidy 43 points off her 10 handicap.

In second place was Brenda Morgan on 42 on a count out from Cheryl Flutter, and Colleen Smit had a fine round of golf and scored a handsome 41 points. Nearest the pin on the seventh went to Brenda Morgan.

Wednesday’s competition was contested by 33 players, no doubt due to the inconvenience that is called work, which would have seen many of the members contemplating how well they would have played if they hadn’t needed to be at the office. Winner with a solid 41 points was Peter Oberholzer, with Pat Vickers beating Rob Roux by count out with 40 points each.

The meat sundowner on Friday had a slightly better field of 42, and Rob Wilson led the field home with a neat 21 points off the nine holes. In second, third and fourth place, all on 20 points, were Johnny Schonken, Tom McNaughton and Jorgie Jorgensen.

AGC welcomes all members to enjoy the beautiful course. Contact the club on 031-9021166 to book a tee-off time.
