Taxi operator gunned down at Isipingo rank

A taxi operator was shot dead by four unknown gunmen in Isipingo on Thursday morning, 9 January.

According to the KZN police media centre, Mzovele Cele (30) was on his way to collect his daily taxi collection money when he was gunned down by four armed men at about 9am. Cele died on the scene.

“Two passengers sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for medical attention,” said police spokesman, Captain Thulani Zwane. “The motive for the killing is unknown. Police are investigating a case of murder and two counts of attempted murder. No arrest has been made.”

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu has strongly condemned yesterday’s killing.

Mchunu sent his condolences to Cele’s family and friends. He has also ordered a full investigation into the matter, which will also establish whether there is a link between Cele’s death and taxi violence.

“It is shocking that a person can be killed in such a barbaric manner. The police revealed that 16 cartridges were found on the scene, which suggests the killers were heavily armed and their sordid act was premeditated. We will work with KZN branch of the South African National Taxi Council to find answers. We also urge community members who might have any information to work with the police to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book with speed,” said Mchunu.
