Schroders see the world from their saddles

KINGSWAY High teacher, Lynn Schroder and her husband Lawrence enjoyed a stunning cycling holiday in Bavaria and Austria, along the banks of the Danube River during the September school holidays.

“We started in Munich, where we stayed with an exchange student, Julie who had spent a year at Kingsway High. We then travelled by train to Salzburg, where the Sound of Music was filmed,” said Lynn.

The seven-day cycle tour started in Passau and ended in Vienna. “Passau has the biggest church organ in the world and we were privileged to go to a lunch-time one hour performance in the cathedral there. It was very beautiful and we saw so many perfectly maintained medieval towns and villages along the way. We were able to pick juicy apples from trees growing near the road whenever we wanted to. The Wagau Valley where they have the biggest vineyards in Austria also had amazing fruit orchards. Our luggage was taken each day from the seven guesthouses for

us so that we did not have to carry our cases on the bikes. We cycled about 350km in the week, stopping often to admire the views, places of interest and enjoy their delicious food. The hired bikes were very good.”

“Our visit to the Lipizzana Stallions in Vienna was for us, one of the most special events of the holiday- we could not believe that we were actually seeing these amazing ‘dancing horses’ which we had only read and dreamed about before. We also attended a Mozart concert in the Golden Hall of the Vienna State Opera House with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which was incredible.

Vienna must be one of the most beautiful, cultural centers of the world. This is such an amazing part of the world and we certainly got a good view from a bicycle.”
